When Sunny discovers her grandfather is "trying" to quit smoking, it brings up a problem with another one of Sunny's relatives, forcing her to confront a family secret that's been bothering her for a while. The dialogue is simple and straightforward, allowing this to be a quick read for kids who naturally fly through books or a more contemplative journey for kids who really sink into the story and/or pay attention to the details in the illustrations. It's easy to keep track of the then and the now thanks to simple text tags with the month and year as well as a different haircut for Sunny - longer hair last year, shorter hair this year. Throughout the story, flashbacks to the previous year reveal important things about Sunny's home life with her parents and two brothers. Together they dream up fun and easy ways to help others and earn some pocket money. Sunny also makes a friend in Buzz, a boy her age who introduces her to the wonderful world of comic books. Luckily, her lively grandpa has lots of activities planned for them - like going to the grocery store! hanging out with the neighbors! eating dinner super early! His sunny disposition gives his granddaughter a newfound appreciation for the simple joys in life. It's the first time she's been away from her family for such a stretch of time, and hanging out with retired folks in Snoozeville is not exactly how she envisioned her summer. Sunny (real name: Sunshine) is spending the summer in Florida with her grandfather. The murder of Countess Evening Winterrose, one of the secret regents of the San Francisco Bay Area, pulls Toby back into the fae world. Unfortunately for her, Faerie has other ideas. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the fae world, retreating into a “normal” life. Or, in the case of October “Toby” Daye, rejecting it completely. Half-human, half-fae, outsiders from birth, these second-class children of Faerie spend their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Secrecy is the key to Faerie’s survival-but no secret can be kept forever, and when the fae and mortal worlds collide, changelings are born. The world of Faerie never disappeared: it merely went into hiding, continuing to exist parallel to our own. Why did we read the book: We first learned about the book via LurvaLaMode and added it to our respective wishlists, so when the author generously offered us a review copy, we said HELL YES (please)! Stand Alone or Series: First in the October Daye series Yet the victim can still somehow live which makes me wonder just how blood circulation works when the body is full of holes. This hole disease does create holes in the body as shown by the last victim who even had one of his eyeballs falling out of it’s socket due to a hole under his eye. So what was this girl so special that she lived so long with the disease? The disease itself doesn’t make much sense either and while Ito does tend to stretch credibility to make his monsters come to life, here is another example where I feel he pushing things too far. For one they state that the girl next door had been afflicted with this hole disease for all her life and yet when other people are infected they die within days. The story itself was relatively simple but I can’t help but notice some logical inconsistencies. In the first story we had a tale about a jade stone which cursed people with a disease that causes holes to open up on their body. Today’s stories fell a bit flat for me as one of Ito’s tendencies to not explain his horrors actually somewhat backfired.
